Artist's Handmade Houses examines the homes and studios crafted by a diverse group of artists from New York to California, including such greats as George Nakashima, Henry Varnum Poor, Sam Maloof, Wharton Esherick, Henry Mercer, Frederic Church, Paolo Santi and Russel Wright, among others. Each artist, most of whom worked at the height of their careers during the early to the mid-twentieth century, turned to their own homes as direct Artist's Handmade Houses examines the homes and studios crafted by a diverse group of artists, including such greats as George Nakashima, Henry Varnum Poor, Sam Maloof, Wharton Esherick, Henry Mercer, Frederic Church, Paolo Santi and Russel Wright, among others. Each artist, most of whom worked at the height of their careers during the early to the mid-twentieth century, turned to their own homes as direct photographs for this book were taken. Photographer Don Freeman, a regular contributor to World of Interiors, captures with great sensitivity the intimacy of these homes and the attention paid to every minute detail, from door knobs to stairwells to the structure of the house itself.; Michael Gotkin's text will place each house in the context of its owner's life and career, providing anecdotes and insights about its development over time and its place in the oeuvre of the artist.
